Class Q Residential Conversions
June 30, 2021
We have a lot of experience in gaining consent for Class Q residential barn conversions. The team normally has several projects on the go. This month has been particularly fruitful with approvals for 9 homes using this type of application. Class Q applications can be tricky. Over the years we have built up a good team of consultants who assist us with structural surveys, contamination surveys and if needed ecology surveys.
In order to be successful a good understanding of the rules and the case law that has built up over the years is essential. All our preferred consultants clearly understand the rules and what is permitted. We are used to tackling the issues that planning authorities raise. Whether the barn is structurally suitable for a conversion is a key issue. Recently we have negotiated over the structural integrity of barns with several planning authorities successfully convincing them that barns are suitable for a conversion.
When we approach any project of this type, we carry out a detailed appraisal at the outset and advise on the chances of success. Not all barns are suitable for residential conversion and we aim to help clients understand their options. In some cases where residential use is not possible, we have gained consents for commercial use or holiday lets.
